The expansion of Masjid Al Haram in Mecca has been successfully completed, marking the largest development project in its history. Led by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the project enhances the mosque’s capacity to accommodate the ever-growing number of pilgrims.
This Ramadan 2025, the Grand Mosque welcomed an astounding two million worshippers, a testament to the success of the expansion. The total area of the mosque has increased from 414,000 square meters to 1.564 million square meters, nearly doubling the prayer space to 912,000 square meters.
Pilgrims now benefit from vastly improved amenities, including an increase in restroom facilities from 3,515 to 16,726, ablution stations from 2,479 to 12,639, and enhanced climate control, with cooling capacity upgraded from 39,000 to 199,000 refrigeration tons.
Beyond its functionality, the expansion brings breathtaking architectural beauty, featuring movable glass domes, intricate facades, Swarovski crystal accents, and Quranic calligraphy spanning 2,700 square meters.
With its completion, the Grand Mosque is now fully equipped to serve millions of worshippers for generations to come. This historic achievement reflects Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s unwavering commitment to improving the pilgrimage experience and ensuring Mecca remains the heart of the Islamic world.
