In a bold step toward advancing gender equality, UN Women in Pakistan has launched a new awareness campaign titled “Mardangi Nahi, Kamzori Hai Yeh”. The initiative aims to challenge harmful gender stereotypes and reshape the way society understands masculinity, encouraging men and boys to become allies in the fight against gender-based violence.

The campaign uses compelling storytelling, digital engagement, and media outreach to spark conversations about how traditional notions of masculinity can contribute to discrimination and violence against women and girls.

Challenging Harmful Gender Norms

The “Mardangi Nahi, Kamzori Hai Yeh” campaign highlights an important message: violence is not strength. Instead, it argues that real strength lies in empathy, accountability, and respect for others.

Through powerful narratives and relatable stories, the campaign seeks to question long-standing stereotypes that associate masculinity with aggression, dominance, or control. By challenging these ideas, the initiative hopes to encourage healthier and more responsible expressions of masculinity.

The campaign also aims to inspire men and boys to actively participate in creating safer communities where women and girls can live free from discrimination and violence.

Encouraging Men to Become Allies for Gender Equality

According to Jamshed M. Kazi, meaningful progress toward gender equality requires a transformation in both attitudes and behaviors.

In a recent commentary published in The News International, he stressed the importance of redefining masculinity as part of the broader effort to eliminate gender-based violence.

“Gender equality requires more than commitment—it requires a shift in mindsets and behaviours,” said Kazi.

He added that the campaign aims to challenge harmful stereotypes while encouraging men and boys to stand for respect, accountability, and equality.

Using Storytelling to Spark Social Change

A central element of the campaign is its focus on creative communication and digital storytelling. By using engaging narratives and relatable scenarios, the initiative seeks to spark meaningful discussions across communities.

The campaign will roll out across multiple platforms, including:

  • Social media campaigns

  • Digital storytelling content

  • Media partnerships and public discussions

  • Community engagement initiatives

Through these channels, the campaign encourages individuals, institutions, and communities to join the conversation and reflect on how masculinity is defined in modern society.

Why Redefining Masculinity Matters

Experts increasingly emphasize that transforming social norms around masculinity is essential for achieving gender equality.

Harmful stereotypes often discourage men from expressing empathy or vulnerability while normalizing aggressive behaviors. These expectations can contribute to cycles of violence and discrimination.

By promoting alternative models of masculinity based on compassion, responsibility, and mutual respect, campaigns like “Mardangi Nahi, Kamzori Hai Yeh” aim to create a cultural shift that benefits everyone.

A Step Toward a More Inclusive Society

The campaign represents part of the broader mission of UN Women to eliminate discrimination and empower women globally.

By leveraging storytelling, digital platforms, and public dialogue, the initiative hopes to contribute to a society where equality and non-violence are the norm.

Ultimately, the message behind “Mardangi Nahi, Kamzori Hai Yeh” is simple yet powerful: true strength is defined not by dominance, but by respect, empathy, and standing up against violence.
