At the silver jubilee celebration of the Islamabad Policy Research Institute (IPRI), Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, former Chairman of the Senate Defence Committee, highlighted the paramount importance of a unified state system. He emphasized that loyalty, patriotism, and meritocracy are essential to achieving any daunting task convincingly.

IPRI: A Premier Think Tank

Founded in 1999 by Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, IPRI has quickly ascended to prominence, now ranked 74th in the global index of think tanks. The institute has made significant contributions to international relations, lawfare, governance, and public policy, while also focusing on strategic studies and economic security.

Senator Mushahid’s Vision

During the 25th anniversary celebration, Senator Mushahid underscored the need for a rapid response think tank dedicated to strategic communication. He argued that crafting effective media narratives is crucial for Pakistan’s image on the global stage. He praised IPRI’s role in enhancing Pakistan’s intellectual landscape and emphasized the importance of clarity and diversity in think tank contributions.

Challenges and Opportunities

Senator Mushahid acknowledged the challenges Pakistan faces but remained optimistic about their resolution through collective effort. He highlighted Pakistan’s historical achievements, including becoming the first Muslim nuclear power, and the strategic decision to develop nuclear capabilities. He stressed that Pakistan’s foreign relations should be balanced and aligned with evolving multilateralism, particularly within frameworks like BRICS, where China and other developing states play leading roles.

The Role of Think Tanks

IPRI President, Ambassador Dr. Raza Muhammad, also spoke at the event, emphasizing the critical role of think tanks in Pakistan’s history. He highlighted IPRI’s global impact through policy research, leading to its high ranking among international think tanks. Dr. Raza reiterated IPRI’s vision of driving qualitative change in research and policy through data, innovation, and technology, focusing on all facets of national security.

Strategic Communication and Global Image

Senator Mushahid called for the development of a rapid response think tank for strategic communication to shape media narratives favorably for Pakistan. He emphasized the need for think tanks to provide clarity and project an image of diversity and resilience on the global stage. This is particularly important as Pakistan navigates its complex geopolitical environment and strives to maintain its image as a peace-loving nation.

The Battle of Ideas

Senator Mushahid noted that modern intellectualism revolves around the “battle of ideas.” He urged Pakistan to choreograph its vision for a better and progressive future, adapting to the shifting dynamics of power politics. This involves recognizing and leveraging Pakistan’s strategic advantages, such as its nuclear capability and its role in international diplomacy.

Moving Forward

The way forward, according to Senator Mushahid, involves national unity and a forward-looking approach. He stressed the importance of being on the same page as a nation-state and focusing on tangible achievements. He also highlighted the need for balanced foreign relations and active participation in multilateral platforms like BRICS.

Importance of think tanks

The silver jubilee celebration of IPRI served as a reminder of the institute’s significant contributions and the importance of think tanks in shaping Pakistan’s strategic future. Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed’s insights underscore the need for unity, meritocracy, and strategic communication in navigating the challenges and opportunities ahead. As Pakistan continues to evolve on the global stage, think tanks like IPRI will play a crucial role in crafting a vision for a better and progressive tomorrow.
