The war in Ukraine, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, continues to grow in both scale and human cost. This protracted conflict has not only ravaged the region militarily but has also had devastating consequences for civilians and soldiers alike, with the casualty toll skyrocketing as the war rages on into 2024.

As the conflict progresses, various reports paint an increasingly grim picture of the war’s toll on human life. Intelligence reports, media outlets, and humanitarian organizations have consistently updated the death toll, with some estimates suggesting nearly one million casualties between Russian and Ukrainian forces since the war’s beginning. This figure includes both military personnel and civilians, showcasing the breadth of suffering the war has inflicted.

A Humanitarian Crisis

According to various reports, civilian deaths have reached alarming levels. Ukrainian officials recently announced that over 12,000 civilians, including 551 children, have been killed since the beginning of the war. Humanitarian organizations, such as the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), reported in February 2024 that over 10,200 civilians had been killed, with another 20,000 wounded. The Action on Armed Violence (AOAV) charity, which tracks civilian deaths through English-language media reports, documented 7,001 civilian deaths by September 23, 2024.

While these numbers alone are tragic, they may only scratch the surface. Many of these organizations stress that these figures represent conservative estimates. For example, AOAV focuses on “incident-specific casualty figures” from verified reports, meaning that actual numbers could be significantly higher. The Donetsk region, which has seen some of the war’s most intense fighting, remains the hardest hit, with 95% of civilian casualties occurring in populated areas.

A Devastating Summer

The summer of 2024 marked one of the deadliest periods since the war’s outset. The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU) documented an unprecedented spike in civilian casualties, particularly during the months of June through August. According to HRMMU, more than 3,200 civilians were killed or injured in this three-month period alone, a staggering 33.7% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

The NRC corroborated these reports, highlighting that attacks across Ukraine, especially in government-controlled territories, killed at least 64 civilians and wounded 392 between August 26 and September 6. August saw the second-highest monthly civilian death toll of 2024, with 184 civilians killed and 856 injured. The only month with a higher toll was July, when at least 219 civilians were killed and 1,018 were injured.

This summer’s surge in civilian deaths is attributed to intensified Russian missile and artillery strikes. Moscow has also renewed its attacks on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. Hospitals, schools, supermarkets, and energy grids have all been targeted, resulting in widespread destruction and prolonged power outages across the country.

Joachim Giaminardi, the NRC’s advocacy manager in Ukraine, emphasized how the war has expanded both geographically and in terms of the frequency and intensity of attacks. He stated: “The people who are paying the price are civilians.” Danielle Bell, head of the HRMMU, similarly described the increasing use of “powerful missiles and bombs [striking] populated areas, killing and injuring civilians across the country.”

Russian Military Losses:

Russia’s official stance on military losses in Ukraine has been one of obfuscation and underreporting. The Russian government has been reluctant to disclose accurate casualty figures, often downplaying the scale of its losses. However, independent Russian media outlets, like Mediazona, have worked tirelessly to uncover the truth. Through open-source research, Mediazona has documented the deaths of more than 71,000 Russian soldiers as of late September 2024, based on obituaries, social media posts, and official statements.

These figures starkly contrast with estimates from other sources. Leaked U.S. intelligence documents, for example, suggest that Russia’s military losses could be significantly higher, with The Economist reporting in July 2024 that between 462,000 and 728,000 Russian soldiers have been killed, injured, or captured since the invasion began. The outlet also noted that Russia’s casualties in Ukraine dwarf those from all its post-World War II conflicts combined, including the wars in Chechnya and Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s General Staff estimated in early October 2024 that more than 654,000 Russian personnel had died. These staggering losses have raised concerns about the sustainability of Russia’s military campaign and the growing domestic discontent within Russia as the war drags on.

Ukrainian Losses:

While the focus of much reporting has been on Russian military losses, Ukraine has also faced catastrophic casualties. The Russian Ministry of Defense estimates that Ukraine has lost nearly half a million men since the war began. However, Western estimates paint a somewhat less severe picture, suggesting that around 80,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since February 2022. Despite these differences, the human toll on Ukraine’s military has been enormous, with many of its soldiers either killed, wounded, or captured.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been acutely aware of the demographic challenges posed by such heavy losses. In 2024, Ukraine faced a severe population decline, with the number of deaths outpacing births by a factor of three in the first half of the year. This demographic crisis is one reason Zelenskyy has refrained from mobilizing men aged 18 to 25, fearing that losing this generation to war would severely impact Ukraine’s long-term recovery.

Moreover, Zelenskyy has been under increasing pressure to secure international support for his country as it struggles to cope with the mounting casualties. Yet, as the war continues to expand geographically, with increasing attacks on both sides, the prospects for peace seem as distant as ever.

The Propaganda War:

The Ukraine war has also seen a fierce propaganda battle, with both Russia and Ukraine framing the conflict to suit their political aims. Russian media, for example, has frequently portrayed Ukraine as a pawn of NATO and the West, while downplaying the scale of civilian casualties caused by Russian forces. Kremlin-aligned outlets like TASS have released reports downplaying civilian deaths, such as the claim that only 80 civilians had been killed since the war began—an understatement compared to independent estimates.

Similarly, Russia’s narrative has sought to emphasize its victories on the battlefield while minimizing its military losses. This propaganda has helped maintain domestic support for the war, even as casualties continue to mount. Meanwhile, Ukrainian media, supported by Western outlets, has emphasized the brutal consequences of Russia’s invasion, painting Ukraine as a victim of Russian aggression and highlighting the extensive civilian suffering caused by Russian missile strikes.

An Ongoing Catastrophe

As the Ukraine war continues into 2024, its human toll remains staggering. With nearly one million casualties, including countless civilians, the conflict has shown no signs of abating. Civilians continue to bear the brunt of the violence, with missile and artillery strikes targeting populated areas, hospitals, and schools. The summer of 2024 marked a particularly deadly period, with civilian casualties reaching new highs.

On the military front, both Russia and Ukraine have suffered heavy losses. Independent reports suggest that Russian casualties may be significantly higher than the Kremlin has acknowledged, while Ukraine continues to grapple with the demographic consequences of its own military losses.

While peace remains elusive, the war’s human toll continues to escalate, leaving the world to grapple with the immense suffering and devastation wrought by this ongoing conflict.
