In early 2025, former U.S. President Donald Trump proposed a plan for the Gaza Strip that has been widely condemned as a form of ethnic cleansing. The proposal involves the United States taking control of Gaza and relocating its Palestinian inhabitants to neighboring countries.

Trump’s Gaza Proposal: An Overview

In February 2025, during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump announced his plan for the U.S. to “take over” the Gaza Strip. He suggested that Palestinians should be resettled in neighboring countries, effectively depopulating the area. Trump stated, “The US will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it, too. We’ll own it.”

International Condemnation and Accusations of Ethnic Cleansing

The proposal has been met with widespread condemnation from various international actors. Human Rights Watch described Trump’s statement as an alarming escalation of forced displacement and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in Gaza.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that any forced displacement of people is tantamount to ethnic cleansing.

Arab nations, including Saudi Arabia and Jordan, have also rejected the plan, viewing it as an unacceptable and dangerous move that could destabilize the region.

Palestinian leaders and groups have vehemently opposed the proposal, with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas condemning the idea of resettling Gazans abroad.

Proponents of the plan might argue that relocating Palestinians could lead to a reduction in hostilities and pave the way for redevelopment in Gaza. However, the forced displacement of an entire population is likely to exacerbate tensions rather than alleviate them. Such actions could lead to widespread resentment among Palestinians and the broader Arab world, potentially fueling further conflict.

Moreover, the proposal disregards the deep-rooted connection Palestinians have to their land. Many families have vowed not to leave Gaza despite ongoing violence and suffering. For instance, families like Saaed Salem’s and Mazouza Abu Hindi’s are determined to stay in Gaza, underscoring their resilience against enforced displacement.

Could Trump’s Gaza Plan Cause a New War?

The forced removal of Palestinians from Gaza could serve as a catalyst for renewed conflict. Such a move would likely be met with resistance from the Palestinian population and could provoke retaliatory actions from militant groups. Additionally, neighboring countries might view the mass displacement as a threat to regional stability, potentially leading to broader confrontations.

The international community’s rejection of the plan further isolates the U.S. and Israel, potentially leading to diplomatic rifts and escalating tensions. The proposal could undermine existing peace agreements and efforts, making the prospect of a new war more likely.

Trump Administration

Trump’s proposal appears to prioritize strategic and political objectives over the rights and aspirations of the Palestinian people. The plan does not address key issues such as Palestinian statehood, self-determination, or the right of return. Instead, it focuses on territorial control and the removal of a population, which many view as a disregard for Palestinian interests.

The international community, including the United Nations, has emphasized the importance of considering the rights and needs of Palestinians in any proposed solution. Forced displacement without consent violates international law and undermines the principles of human rights.

Trump Solution:

Trump’s plan suggests a solution that involves the removal of Palestinians from Gaza and the U.S. taking control of the territory. This approach aligns with a broader strategy of territorial acquisition and population displacement, which has been widely condemned as unethical and illegal under international law.

Critics argue that such a solution fails to address the root causes of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and instead imposes a unilateral decision that disregards the rights and desires of the Palestinian people. A sustainable solution would require addressing issues such as mutual recognition, security, borders, and the status of Jerusalem through dialogue and negotiation.

Donald Trump’s proposal

Donald Trump’s proposal to take over the Gaza Strip and relocate its Palestinian inhabitants has been widely condemned as a form of ethnic cleansing. The plan has faced rejection from the international community, including human rights organizations, the United Nations, and Arab nations. Rather than bringing peace, the forced displacement of Palestinians is likely to exacerbate tensions and could potentially lead to renewed conflict. A sustainable solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict requires a comprehensive approach that respects the rights and aspirations of all parties involved.
