the First Vice-President of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Judge Rosario Salvatore Aitala, and Registrar Osvaldo Zavala Giler visited Santiago, Chile, to advance cooperation and promote international justice.

High-Level Engagements

The delegation met with Foreign Affairs Minister H.E. Alberto van Klaveren, who reaffirmed Chile’s support for the ICC and committed to exploring new cooperation agreements. Discussions with Justice and Human Rights Minister H.E. Jaime Gajardo Falcón focused on enhancing state cooperation and organizing trainings on the Rome Statute for legal professionals. Meetings with Supreme Court President Ricardo Blanco Herrera and Attorney General Ángel Valencia Vásquez addressed strategies to combat impunity and strengthen judicial collaboration. A visit to the Museum of Memory and Human Rights underscored Chile’s human rights commitment.

Academic Partnerships

Registrar Zavala Giler signed Memoranda of Understanding with the University of Chile, Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, and University of Talca to promote ICC awareness, expertise, and knowledge exchange through internship programs.

Educational Outreach

The ICC leaders delivered lectures at the Diplomatic Academy Andrés Bello and the Catholic University of Chile, engaging future diplomats and lawyers on the ICC’s mission.

Chile’s reaffirmed support positions it as a vital ICC partner, fostering collaboration in judicial, academic, and diplomatic efforts to uphold global justice.
