Anchorage, Alaska, is emerging as the likely venue for the upcoming meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. The city is steeped in history — from its deep Russian roots and WWII connections to the devastating 7.2-magnitude earthquake of 2018. Alaska was once part of Russia until it was sold to the US in the 1860s, and Anchorage still hosts the graves of Soviet pilots who died during the Alaska–Siberia air route in World War II. The city is also known for its Elmendorf-Richardson military base, visited by President Joe Biden in 2023, and its iconic dog sled races. The meeting location was confirmed on Friday after the UAE and Italy were also considered.
