Cricket has long been a unifying force in Pakistan, a nation passionate about the sport. However, the tragic attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore on March 3, 2009, led to a significant hiatus in international cricket within the country. For over a decade, Pakistan faced isolation from hosting major cricketing events, with teams expressing security concerns. Amidst this challenging period, Zimbabwe emerged as a trailblazer, becoming the first international team to tour Pakistan in 2015, marking a crucial turning point in Pakistan’s cricketing narrative.

The 2009 Attack and Its Aftermath

The 2009 attack was a watershed moment for Pakistan cricket. The ambush on the Sri Lankan team bus near Gaddafi Stadium resulted in multiple casualties and injuries, casting a long shadow over Pakistan’s reputation as a safe venue for international sports. Consequently, international teams were reluctant to tour the country, leading Pakistan to host its “home” matches in neutral venues like the United Arab Emirates. This period of isolation deprived local fans of witnessing international cricket on home soil and posed significant challenges for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in terms of logistics and finances.

Zimbabwe’s Historic Tour in 2015

In this context of uncertainty and seclusion, Zimbabwe’s decision to tour Pakistan in May 2015 was monumental. The tour comprised two T20 Internationals and three One Day Internationals (ODIs), all held at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. This visit was not just a series of matches; it was a statement of solidarity and trust in Pakistan’s efforts to restore its status as a safe destination for international cricket.

The significance of Zimbabwe’s tour cannot be overstated. It broke the prolonged absence of international cricket in Pakistan and sent a positive message to the global cricketing community. The successful and incident-free completion of the series demonstrated Pakistan’s improved security measures and its readiness to host international teams again.

Catalyst for Subsequent Tours

Zimbabwe’s 2015 tour served as a catalyst, encouraging other cricketing nations to reconsider touring Pakistan. Following Zimbabwe’s lead, several teams scheduled visits:

  • West Indies: Toured Pakistan in 2018 for a T20I series.
  • Sri Lanka: Returned for a full series in 2019, including Test matches.
  • Bangladesh: Played T20Is and a Test match in Pakistan in 2020.
  • South Africa: Conducted a successful tour in 2021.

These tours were instrumental in reintegrating Pakistan into the international cricketing fold and restoring confidence among players and officials regarding safety in the country.

Hosting the ICC Champions Trophy 2025

Building on the momentum of successful tours, Pakistan is set to host the ICC Champions Trophy in February 2025. This will be the first major multi-nation cricket tournament in the country since co-hosting the 1996 Cricket World Cup. The Champions Trophy will feature the top eight men’s teams, including Australia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, and South Africa. The tournament is scheduled to commence on February 19, with Pakistan facing New Zealand in the opening match in Karachi, and the final slated for March 9.

The PCB has undertaken extensive preparations to ensure the event’s success, including significant upgrades to stadiums in Karachi and Lahore to meet international standards. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi expressed optimism that a successful Champions Trophy could pave the way for more international events in Pakistan. He emphasized the importance of showcasing Pakistan’s capability to host major tournaments and the potential positive impact on the country’s image and economy.

Future Prospects and ICC’s Perspective

The successful hosting of the Champions Trophy is anticipated to bolster Pakistan’s aspirations to host more ICC events in the future. The PCB has expressed interest in hosting ICC events during the 2023-31 cycle, aiming to capitalize on the renewed confidence in Pakistan’s hosting capabilities. A PCB spokesperson stated, “We will work in line with ICC guidelines and look forward to submitting strong proposals in the coming months.”

The ICC’s decision to award the Champions Trophy to Pakistan is a testament to the country’s improved security situation and organizational capabilities. It reflects the ICC’s confidence in Pakistan’s ability to host international events safely and successfully. The PCB’s efforts in recent years, including hosting the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and bilateral series, have demonstrated the country’s readiness to welcome international cricket back to its shores.

Courageous tour

Zimbabwe’s courageous tour in 2015 was a watershed moment that played a pivotal role in reviving international cricket in Pakistan. It not only ended a prolonged period of isolation but also set the stage for subsequent tours by other nations, culminating in Pakistan hosting the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025. This journey underscores the resilience of Pakistan’s cricketing community and the unifying power of sport in overcoming adversity. As Pakistan prepares to host the Champions Trophy, the nation stands on the cusp of reestablishing itself as a central hub for international cricket, with a future that looks increasingly bright.
