The road to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028 has officially begun, with Australia and New Zealand launching the host city and venue selection process for what promises to be the biggest cricket event ever staged in the southern hemisphere.

Host City Bidding Process Underway

Cricket authorities have invited states, territories, regions, and venues across both nations to submit proposals to host matches for the tournament. Up to 10 venues will ultimately be selected, with the final list expected to be announced by the end of 2026.

The tournament, awarded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to Cricket Australia and New Zealand Cricket, is set to deliver a world-class cricketing spectacle across two cricket-loving nations.

Tournament Format and Schedule

Scheduled for October and November 2028, the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will feature:

  • 20 international teams
  • 55 matches in total
    • 40 Group Stage matches
    • 12 Super 8 matches
    • 2 Semi-Finals
    • 1 Final

This expanded format ensures more high-intensity games and greater global participation, further elevating the tournament’s prestige.

Qualified Teams So Far

As co-hosts, Australia and New Zealand have automatically qualified. Several cricketing powerhouses have also secured their spots based on performance and rankings:

  • India (reigning champions)
  • England
  • Pakistan
  • South Africa
  • Sri Lanka
  • West Indies
  • Zimbabwe

Additionally, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Ireland qualified via ICC rankings as of March 9, 2026. The remaining eight spots will be determined through regional qualification tournaments, adding an extra layer of global competition.

India: The Team to Watch

All eyes will be on India national cricket team, the reigning champions and one of the most dominant forces in modern T20 cricket. Their presence is expected to drive massive global viewership and fan engagement.

Economic and Global Impact

According to tournament CEO Joel Morrison, the event is expected to generate substantial economic, social, and promotional benefits for host cities. Major cricket tournaments often boost tourism, infrastructure development, and international exposure.

The collaborative approach between governments, venues, commercial partners, and local communities will be key to delivering a successful and memorable tournament.

A Festival of Cricket Awaits

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028 is shaping up to be more than just a sporting event—it’s set to become a global festival of cricket. With elite players, passionate fans, and iconic venues across Australia and New Zealand, the tournament promises unmatched excitement in the shortest format of the game.

As the venue selection process unfolds, anticipation will continue to build toward what could be one of the most thrilling editions in T20 World Cup history.
