For decades, climate scientists viewed wildfires primarily as a consequence of rising temperatures. Today, a growing body of research suggests the relationship is becoming increasingly circular. As Europe experiences hotter summers, forests become drier and more combustible. Once these forests burn, they release enormous quantities of greenhouse gases while simultaneously destroying one of the continent’s most effective natural carbon sinks. The result is a dangerous climate feedback loop in which heat fuels fires, and fires contribute to even warmer conditions.

Recent events have intensified this concern. Massive evacuations around Bordeaux in southwestern France and expanding wildfire emergencies across Southern Europe illustrate how rapidly the situation is evolving.   • Atmospheric greenhouse gases continue increasing.

Breaking this cycle becomes progressively more difficult.

Policy Responses Must Go Beyond Firefighting

Europe’s current wildfire strategy has focused primarily on emergency response.

However, climate experts increasingly argue that prevention and adaptation require equal attention.

Long-term priorities include:

  • Restoring climate-resilient forests
  • Improving early fire detection technologies
  • Expanding cross-border firefighting cooperation
  • Investing in drought-resistant ecosystems
  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions
  • Strengthening urban planning in fire-prone regions

Without these structural changes, annual firefighting efforts alone may struggle to contain increasingly severe wildfire seasons.

Fires Are Becoming Both a Symptom and a Driver

One of the most important shifts in climate science is recognizing that wildfires are no longer merely indicators of climate change.

Increasing evidence suggests they are becoming active participants in accelerating regional warming.

Europe now faces an interconnected environmental system where rising temperatures increase wildfire frequency, while repeated fires weaken forests’ capacity to stabilize the climate.

The result is not a single catastrophic event but a gradual erosion of Europe’s natural climate defenses.

The evidence suggests that continuous forest fires are unlikely to independently cause Europe’s temperature rise, but they significantly amplify the warming already driven by global greenhouse gas emissions.
