The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) expresses gratitude for the generous contribution of EUR 3.5 million from the Government of France. The funding will support the ongoing flood response efforts in Pakistan, specifically targeting women and children who are suffering from life-threatening malnutrition.

With the assistance provided by France, WFP will be able to extend critical support to thousands of children under the age of five, as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls, who are facing acute malnutrition in the regions of Sindh and Balochistan.

French Government Contributes EUR 3.5 Million to WFP’s Flood Response in Pakistan, Aiding Malnutrition Crisis Among Women and Children

While the floodwaters have largely receded in most parts of Pakistan after the unprecedented floods of last year, a new and deadly threat looms large in the form of soaring food prices and high inflation. These factors have made it increasingly challenging for millions of people to afford and access nutritious food, leading to severe cases of acute malnutrition among women and children in the worst-affected districts.

Nicolas Galey, Ambassador of France to Pakistan, emphasized the French Government’s commitment to solidarity with the people of Pakistan

During a meeting with WFP, Nicolas Galey, Ambassador of France to Pakistan, emphasized the French Government’s commitment to solidarity with the people of Pakistan, especially the vulnerable communities in Sindh and Balochistan that were most affected by the 2022 floods.

Galey stated that the timely contribution of EUR 3.5 million will support ongoing efforts to improve food security, strengthen community resilience, and prioritize the nutrition of women, girls, and children under five.

A rapid survey conducted in 15 flood-affected districts across Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan revealed alarming statistics. Approximately one-third of children between the ages of 6 and 23 months suffer from moderate acute malnutrition, while 14 percent are affected by severe acute malnutrition.

Expressing deep concern about the emerging nutrition crisis, Chris Kaye, Country Director of WFP, highlighted the distressing increase in severe acute malnutrition cases among women and children.

Kaye reiterated WFP’s unwavering commitment to address the situation urgently and expressed immense gratitude for the funding provided by the Government of France. The contribution will enable WFP to reach some of the most vulnerable communities and provide life-saving assistance.

This EUR 3.5 million donation is the latest addition to a series of significant contributions from the Government of France, further demonstrating its dedication to eradicating malnutrition in partnership with other stakeholders and supporting Pakistan’s flood recovery.

In 2022, France contributed EUR 1 million to the Integrated Nutrition-Safety Net Project, benefiting flood-affected pregnant and breastfeeding women in Sindh. Additionally, France provided EUR 2 million to support WFP’s flood response activities last year.

The cumulative contribution of EUR 6.5 million will serve as a lifeline for hundreds of thousands of Pakistanis whose lives and livelihoods were devastated by the floods.

WFP extends its heartfelt appreciation to the Government of France for its continued support and commitment to improving the lives of the most vulnerable populations in Pakistan. The funding will play a vital role in alleviating the suffering caused by malnutrition and ensuring a brighter future for women and children affected by the floods.

The decision to extend significant aid to Pakistan reflects the deepening partnership between France and Pakistan across various sectors, including economic, development, and security cooperation. It exemplifies the shared commitment to addressing key issues, strengthening resilience, and promoting stability in the region.

The aid package encompasses various areas of support, ranging from humanitarian relief to development initiatives. It aims to address urgent needs, uplift vulnerable communities, and contribute to the socio-economic development of Pakistan.

The assistance is expected to target critical sectors such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and capacity-building, with a particular focus on the most vulnerable populations.
