Germany is on the brink of a significant political transformation as Friedrich Merz, leader of the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), is set to be elected as the country’s next chancellor on May 6, 2025. This development follows weeks of coalition negotiations and is poised to reshape Germany’s domestic and foreign policies.

A New Coalition Government

Merz’s anticipated election comes after the CDU, in alliance with its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), and the center-left Social Democrats (SPD), reached a coalition agreement. The coalition, holding a combined 328 of the 630 seats in the Bundestag, aims to address pressing issues such as economic growth, defense spending, and migration control

Key Policy Shifts Under Merz

Under Merz’s leadership, Germany is expected to adopt a more stringent approach to immigration. The coalition agreement outlines plans to reduce the number of new asylum seekers to below 100,000 per year, citing concerns over the strain on the country’s infrastructure . Additionally, Merz has proposed suspending family reunifications and implementing broader deportation measures, including pushbacks at Germany’s borders in coordination with neighboring countries .

Economic and Foreign Policy Directions

The new coalition government also signals a shift in economic policy. Merz’s administration plans to abandon the previous government’s “debt brake” fiscal conservatism, paving the way for increased public investment, particularly in defense and economic modernization . On the international stage, Germany aims to strengthen transatlantic relations, with a focus on negotiating a medium-term free trade deal with the United States.

Looking Ahead

As Germany prepares for this political transition, the outcomes of the SPD membership vote and the subsequent coalition approval will be pivotal. If successful, Merz’s election on May 6 will mark the beginning of a new era in German politics, characterized by a conservative-led coalition government with a focus on economic revitalization and stricter immigration policies
