Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy received significant support from his G7 counterparts as the summit in Hiroshima concluded, bolstering Ukraine’s war effort while Russia claimed a symbolic victory on the battlefield. Zelenskyy’s presence at the summit underscored the central focus of the G7 on the conflict, diverting attention from other agenda items. The G7 leaders reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Ukraine through various dimensions, and Zelenskyy engaged in crucial discussions with both G7 members and invited guests, including India and South Korea. However, the Russian seizure of the city of Bakhmut loomed over the talks, intensifying the urgency of international support for Ukraine.

 

G7 Backing for Ukraine:

 

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida affirmed the G7’s steadfast support for Ukraine, emphasizing their commitment to backing Ukraine from all possible dimensions. President Zelenskyy engaged in multiple rounds of meetings with G7 leaders and held individual discussions with several participants, including important allies.

The backdrop of the discussions was Russia’s claim that the city of Bakhmut had fallen under the control of the Wagner private army, backed by Russian troops. While the situation remained uncertain, Zelenskyy acknowledged the likelihood of Russian forces taking the city.

U.S. President Joe Biden announced a new military aid package worth $375 million for Ukraine, including ammunition and armored vehicles.

Biden assured Zelenskyy of unwavering support, emphasizing that the U.S. stood firmly with Ukraine. Furthermore, the G7 nations unveiled additional sanctions and measures targeting Russia in response to its invasion of Ukraine that began in February the previous year.

 

Global Challenges Addressed:

 

While Ukraine dominated the discussions, the G7 leaders and the European Union also aimed to address pressing global concerns. Climate change, poverty, economic instability, and nuclear proliferation were among the critical issues discussed during the summit. Additionally, President Biden sought to reassure world leaders about the U.S.’s financial stability amidst the ongoing debt limit standoff that cast a shadow over his trip.

Prime Minister Kishida and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol visited a memorial for Korean victims of the Hiroshima atomic bombing.

Improving Regional Relations:
