Lord Qurban Hussain, a respected member of the House of Lords in the United Kingdom, recently expressed concerns about the insecurity faced by various minority groups in India. His remarks shed light on the plight of Kashmiris, Sikhs, Dalits, Muslims, and other marginalized communities. During a meeting with Dr Sardar Muhammad Tahir Tabassum, an esteemed human rights advocate and president of the Institute of Peace & Development, Lord Qurban Hussain emphasized the need for action to address the ongoing challenges faced by these communities.

Insecurity of Kashmiris and the Heroism of Burhan Wani:

Lord Qurban Hussain acknowledged the struggles faced by Kashmiris and praised the late Shaheed Burhan Wani as a symbol of freedom. He highlighted Wani’s sacrifice, which has inspired hope and resilience among the youth in Kashmir.

Lord Qurban Hussain stressed the urgency of implementing United Nations resolutions on the Kashmir issue, calling for international organizations like the United Nations and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to take practical measures to end the atrocities in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Challenges Faced by the Hurriyat Leadership:

The Hurriyat leadership, represented by figures like Yasin Malik, has been subjected to unjust treatment, including false cases. Lord Qurban Hussain expressed concern over the death penalty imposed on Yasin Malik, warning that such actions would hinder the prospects of peace and further inflame the Kashmiri population.

He called for the immediate dismissal of fictitious cases against the Hurriyat leadership, emphasizing the importance of justice and fairness.

Opposition to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by the Sikh Community:

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), acting on behalf of the Sikh community, has strongly opposed the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) put forth by the Indian government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Following a thorough discussion in the SGPC’s Executive Committee meeting, President Harjinder Singh Dhami stated that the UCC is unnecessary and raises concerns among minorities. The Sikh community fears that such a code could undermine their distinct identity, heritage, and principles.

Conclusion:

Lord Qurban Hussain’s statements underscore the challenges faced by various minority groups in India, including Kashmiris, Sikhs, Dalits, Muslims, and others. The need for immediate action to address their insecurities and protect their rights is evident.

The international community, represented by organizations such as the United Nations and the OIC, should play an active role in ensuring justice, ending atrocities, and promoting religious harmony in India.

Similarly, the opposition of the Sikh community to the proposed Uniform Civil Code highlights the concerns about preserving their unique identity and cultural traditions. It is essential to address these issues and work towards a society that respects and safeguards the rights of all its citizens, irrespective of their religious or ethnic backgrounds.
