A recent visit by a delegation from the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) to Afghanistan marked a significant step towards enhancing bilateral ties and promoting regional cooperation. Led by Ambassador Sohail Mahmood, Director General of ISSI, the delegation engaged in constructive dialogues and meetings, underlining the shared historical, cultural, and geographical bonds between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The visit, hosted by the Centre for Strategic Studies (CSS) in Kabul, aimed to foster mutual understanding and collaboration, reinforcing the urgent need for stronger ties between the two nations.

 

Highlighting Commonalities and Shared Goals

During their visit, the ISSI delegation emphasized the enduring closeness between Pakistan and Afghanistan, grounded in their common faith, culture, and geographic proximity. The discussions with Afghan officials, including Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, centered on the imperative of robust cooperation for a stable and prosperous region. Ambassador Mahmood reiterated the importance of mutual engagement, asserting that it’s not merely an option but a necessity for both nations.

 

Progress Under the Interim Government

Acting Foreign Minister Muttaqi shared insights into the achievements made under the Afghan interim government. These accomplishments encompassed significant strides in ensuring national security, economic growth, curbing poppy cultivation, and tackling corruption.

Particularly noteworthy was the advancement in bilateral trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan, underscoring the potential for enhanced economic collaboration. The officials stressed the significance of expanding this economic partnership to encompass broader regional trade and connectivity initiatives.

 

Addressing Security Concerns and Counter-terrorism

Ambassador Mahmood highlighted Pakistan’s pivotal role in contributing to Afghanistan’s stability. He emphasized the urgency of addressing security challenges and counter-terrorism efforts through collaborative consultations.
