The global order is at a pivotal crossroads as the world grapples with the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Think tank experts and scholars from around the world gathered in Beijing during the eighth China Global Think Tank Innovation Forum to deliberate on the future trajectory of the global order. With insights from renowned thinkers like Erik Solheim, Joseph Nye, Rong Ying, and Sun Jisheng, the forum shed light on the direction the world may take in the post-pandemic era.

Mutual Respect and Dialogue: The Pillars of the 21st Century

Erik Solheim, former under-secretary-general of the United Nations, highlighted the foundational principles of the 21st century global order. He emphasized the importance of mutual respect for different civilizations and dialogue as essential tools for issue resolution. In a world marked by diversity, understanding and cooperation between nations are crucial for a harmonious global community.

China-U.S. Relations: Competitive Collaboration and Coexistence

Joseph Nye, a distinguished U.S. political scientist, turned his attention to the pivotal relationship between China and the United States. He rejected the notion that a new Cold War has descended upon these two superpowers. Instead, he underlined the deep-seated interdependence and cooperation in various fields, such as trade, education, and ecological conservation. Nye advocated for competitive collaboration and coexistence as the path forward, emphasizing that both countries have a role to play in shaping a more balanced global order.

The “1+2+3” Scheme for Globalized Win-Win Cooperation

Rong Ying, vice president of the China Institute of International Studies (CIIS), introduced a visionary approach to global cooperation. The “1+2+3” scheme represents a comprehensive strategy for peaceful development. “1” symbolizes the aspiration for a single global community of shared future. “2” underscores the importance of two platforms: the Chinese path to modernization and the Belt and Road Initiative. “3” points to the three initiatives proposed by China: the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, and Global Civilization Initiative. Together, this scheme aims to foster globalized win-win cooperation and usher in a more interconnected and prosperous world.

The Digital Age and Think Tank’s Role

Sun Jisheng, vice president of China Foreign Affairs University, emphasized the transformative impact of the digital age on the global landscape. The interconnectedness of the digital world means that regional issues can have far-reaching consequences for the entire globe. In this context, think tanks play a crucial role in building mutual trust, seeking consensus, and finding solutions to complex challenges. They have the potential to positively influence policy and decision-making processes, contributing to a more stable and harmonious global order.

Conclusion

The China Global Think Tank Innovation Forum serves as a platform for some of the world’s brightest minds to come together and explore the path forward in the post-pandemic era. With a focus on mutual respect, dialogue, competitive collaboration, and forward-thinking initiatives, the discussions at the forum provide hope for a future global order that prioritizes cooperation, stability, and shared prosperity. As the world grapples with ongoing challenges, the insights shared at the forum offer valuable perspectives on shaping a more inclusive and resilient global community.
