The ongoing second Test match between Pakistan and Bangladesh in Rawalpindi has placed Pakistan on the brink of a historic defeat. Despite promising individual performances from Shan Masood, Saim Ayub, and Salman Ali Agha, Pakistan’s batting line-up collapsed, managing to put up only 274 runs in their first innings. Bangladesh’s bowlers, particularly Mehidy Hasan Miraz, capitalized on the favorable conditions, leaving Pakistan in a precarious position.

What happened:

Bangladesh’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss proved to be a masterstroke. The visitors exploited the moisture in the pitch, and their bowlers struck early to dismiss Pakistan’s openers cheaply. Although Pakistan showed resistance with half-centuries from Masood, Ayub, and Agha, they were unable to convert these starts into substantial scores due to consistent pressure from the Bangladeshi bowlers. Mehidy Hasan Miraz was particularly destructive, taking 5 wickets for 61 runs, and was well-supported by Taskin Ahmed, who chipped in with three crucial wickets.

In response, Bangladesh’s openers safely negotiated the final overs of the day, reaching 10 for no loss at stumps, trailing Pakistan by 264 runs. The match is now heavily tilted in favor of Bangladesh, with Pakistan’s inexperienced bowling attack struggling in the absence of key pacers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah.

Why Pakistan is Struggling Despite Changes

The Pakistani team’s struggles in this Test match can be attributed to several factors:

  1. Inexperienced Bowling Attack: With Shaheen Afridi rested and Naseem Shah unavailable, Pakistan fielded a relatively inexperienced bowling unit. The four frontline bowlers have a combined experience of just 16 Tests. This lack of experience was evident as they struggled to maintain pressure on the Bangladeshi batsmen, allowing them to build a solid start in their first innings.
  2. Batting Collapses: Pakistan’s batting lineup has been inconsistent throughout this series. Despite good starts from their top order, the middle and lower order failed to capitalize. The dismissals of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, who have been the backbone of Pakistan’s batting in recent times, left the team vulnerable. The inability to build partnerships has been a recurring issue for Pakistan, and this match was no different.
  3. Fielding Lapses: Pakistan’s fielding has been subpar, with crucial catches being dropped at key moments. These lapses have not only allowed Bangladesh to escape difficult situations but have also demoralized the Pakistani bowlers, who were already under pressure due to their inexperience.
  4. Bangladesh’s Improved Performance: Bangladesh, on the other hand, has shown significant improvement in their game. Their bowlers, led by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, have been disciplined and relentless, exploiting Pakistan’s weaknesses effectively. The return of Taskin Ahmed from injury added more firepower to their attack, making life difficult for the Pakistani batsmen.

Is the Pakistani Team Suffering from Internal Differences?

Speculation about internal differences within the Pakistani team has been rife, especially after their inconsistent performances in recent times. While there is no concrete evidence to suggest major rifts, the team’s body language on the field has been concerning. The lack of cohesion and the visible frustration among players during the game indicate possible underlying issues.

Reports suggest that there might be disagreements over team selection and strategies, particularly concerning the resting of key players like Shaheen Afridi. The decision to rest Afridi, despite the importance of this Test match, has raised eyebrows and led to questions about the team management’s decisions.

Furthermore, the leadership of Babar Azam has also come under scrutiny. While Babar is undoubtedly one of the world’s top batsmen, his captaincy has been criticized for being reactive rather than proactive. The inability to motivate and guide a young and inexperienced bowling attack in crucial moments has exposed the limitations of his leadership.

Historic defeat:

Pakistan’s performance in this Test match has been disappointing, and they are now staring at a potential historic defeat against Bangladesh. The reasons for this downfall are multifaceted, including an inexperienced bowling attack, inconsistent batting, and possible internal differences within the team. Bangladesh, on the other hand, has capitalized on Pakistan’s weaknesses and put themselves in a commanding position to win the Test match.

If Pakistan is to avoid defeat, they will need to drastically improve their performance in the remaining days of the Test. However, given the current situation, a victory for Bangladesh seems more likely, which would be a significant achievement for them in the context of their cricketing history.
