The political dynamics in the Middle East have long been shaped by complex power struggles, but recent developments involving Israeli pressure on Jordan to restrict the entry of Pakistani nationals are raising concerns about Jordan’s sovereignty, its stance on Israel, and the region’s geopolitical future.

Jordan Imposes Visa restriction on Pakistani Citizens

Jordan has imposed a new visa restriction on Pakistani and Afghan citizens, ending the facility of visa-on-arrival, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Jordan. The move has left Pakistani travelers in limbo, as they can no longer apply for visas through the Jordanian Embassy in Pakistan. Instead, applications must now be submitted directly to the Jordanian authorities.

When contacted by Think Tank Journal, the Jordanian Embassy in Pakistan stated, “We cannot do anything; this is the decision of the Jordanian government.”

Further investigation revealed that many travel agencies are now reluctant to provide services to Pakistani citizens planning to visit Jordan.

A former diplomat, commenting on the situation, claimed, “The Jordanian government has effectively become an Israeli colony and is now acting under Israel’s influence.”

This latest development has raised concerns over increasing restrictions for Pakistani travelers and the geopolitical influences behind such decisions.

Why Does Israel Want to Stop Pakistanis from Entering Jordan?

Israel’s push to limit Pakistani access to Jordan may be rooted in its broader security concerns. As a country with strong ties to Palestine and a consistent stance against Israeli aggression, Pakistan represents a challenge to Israel’s narrative in the Middle East. Pakistani nationals entering Jordan may be viewed by Israel as potential supporters of the Palestinian cause, particularly as Jordan hosts millions of Palestinian refugees and remains a key advocate for Palestinian rights.

Furthermore, Pakistan’s military capabilities and its vocal support for Palestine could pose a perceived threat to Israel’s interests in the region. By pressuring Jordan to restrict Pakistani entry, Israel may be attempting to neutralize any potential influence Pakistan might have on the Jordanian public or its political landscape.

Why is the Jordanian Government Looking Helpless?

Jordan finds itself in a precarious position, balancing its relationship with Israel and its obligations to its citizens and neighboring allies. Several factors contribute to the Jordanian government’s perceived helplessness:

  1. Economic Dependency: Jordan’s struggling economy heavily relies on aid and trade agreements, including those with Israel and the United States. Any resistance to Israeli demands could jeopardize this financial support.
  2. Geopolitical Vulnerability: Surrounded by conflict zones and hosting a significant Palestinian population, Jordan is under constant pressure to maintain internal stability. Israel’s demands often come with promises of security assistance, leaving Jordan little room to maneuver.
  3. International Dynamics: With limited backing from Arab nations and a lack of unified support for Palestinian causes, Jordan faces growing isolation in its regional stance.

Israel’s Dominance in Jordan: A Growing Influence

Israel’s influence in Jordan has expanded over the years, stemming from economic, security, and geopolitical ties. The 1994 Wadi Araba Peace Treaty formalized relations between the two nations, but critics argue that the treaty has enabled Israel to exercise outsized influence over Jordanian policies.

Jordan’s reliance on Israel for water resources, energy agreements, and trade has further deepened this dependency. Additionally, Israel’s strategic interests in ensuring a secure border with Jordan have led to increased cooperation between the two countries, often at the expense of Jordan’s autonomy.

Will Jordan Lose Its Sovereignty in the Future?

As Israel’s influence in Jordan grows, concerns about the erosion of Jordan’s sovereignty become more pronounced. Analysts warn that continued economic and security dependency on Israel could pave the way for Jordan to become a de facto client state.

The prospect of Jordan losing its sovereignty is particularly alarming given the country’s strategic role in the region. If current trends continue, Jordan may find itself forced to make concessions that undermine its independence, such as altering its policies to align with Israeli interests or even redefining its historical support for Palestinian statehood.

Jordan and Israel:

Jordan officially recognizes Israel as a legitimate state under the 1994 peace treaty. However, this recognition remains a contentious issue among the Jordanian public, many of whom view Israel as an occupier. The growing pressure from Israel to implement policies that alienate pro-Palestinian allies like Pakistan could exacerbate public discontent, potentially destabilizing Jordan’s internal politics.

The future of Jordan’s stance on Israel hinges on its ability to maintain a balance between honoring its treaties and responding to the will of its people. If Israel’s influence continues to grow unchecked, Jordan may be forced to adopt positions that align more closely with Israeli interests, further straining its relationship with other Arab and Muslim-majority nations.

  1. Increased Israeli Control: If Jordan continues to succumb to Israeli pressure, it may increasingly operate under policies dictated by Israel, compromising its sovereignty.
  2. Regional Isolation: Jordan’s willingness to align with Israeli interests could alienate it from other Arab nations, weakening its position in the Arab League and beyond.
  3. Public Backlash: The Jordanian public’s dissatisfaction with Israel’s influence could lead to protests and demands for government reform, potentially destabilizing the country.
  4. Shift in Alliances: Jordan may seek to diversify its alliances, potentially turning to countries like China or Russia to counterbalance Israeli and Western influence.

Growing pressure from Israel

The growing pressure from Israel on Jordan to restrict Pakistani entry highlights the fragile balance Jordan must maintain in its regional relationships. As Israel’s dominance increases, Jordan’s sovereignty and historical stance on key issues like Palestine are being called into question.

While the future remains uncertain, Jordan faces critical decisions that will shape its role in the Middle East. Whether it continues to yield to Israeli demands or asserts its independence will determine not only its sovereignty but also its legacy as a steadfast supporter of Palestinian rights in the Arab world.
