Cooperation between Pakistan and China in the dairy industry has the potential to propel Pakistan’s domestic dairy sector towards a contemporary path of development. According to the Pakistan-China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI), Pakistan’s status as one of the world’s top milk producers, coupled with China’s multifarious demands for high-quality dairy products, presents an opportunity for both countries to enhance economic value and foster mutually beneficial outcomes.
Adopting Chinese Technologies for Flourishing Dairy Industry:
During a think-tank session held at the PCJCCI Secretariat, President Moazzam Ghurki emphasized the significance of Pakistan’s dairy industry and its potential for growth.
With an annual milk production of over 60 million tonnes, Pakistan stands as one of the largest milk producers globally. Collaborative ventures and exports in the dairy sector hold the promise of boosting Pakistan’s economy.
China’s dairy imports have been steadily increasing, with compound annual growth of 12.3% between 2011 and 2023.
Exploring Collaboration: China’s Growing Demand for Dairy Products:
Fang Yulong, Senior Vice President of PCJCCI, expressed the willingness to explore opportunities for collaboration in the Pakistani dairy industry. China’s dairy imports have been steadily increasing, with compound annual growth of 12.3% between 2011 and 2023.
The Chinese market shows high demand for various dairy products, including milk powder, liquid milk, whey, cheese, butter, and cream.
Government Support and Challenges in Pakistan’s Dairy Industry:
Highlighting the current sources of China’s dairy imports, PCJCCI Vice President Hamza Khalid pointed out that New Zealand, the Netherlands, and Australia dominate the market.
Khalid stressed the importance of government support in boosting Pakistan’s dairy industry, enhancing both domestic production and export capabilities. Addressing challenges such as adulteration and the need for education and modern technology for farmers is crucial.
Balochistan’s Potential and Win-Win Outcomes for Dairy Industry:
Salahuddin Hanif, Secretary General of the PCJCCI, highlighted the potential of animal husbandry as a pillar industry in Pakistan, particularly in Balochistan, where the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and Gwadar Port are located.
Balochistan possesses unique advantages for breeding beef cattle and dairy cows. Extending China’s industrial chain to Pakistan has the potential to yield win-win outcomes for both countries’ dairy industries.
Strengthening Economic Ties through Dairy Industry Cooperation:
Cooperation between Pakistan and China in the dairy industry offers a promising avenue for economic growth. Pakistan’s position as a major milk producer, combined with China’s expanding demand for dairy products, provides an opportunity to strengthen bilateral trade ties and enhance economic value.
By leveraging Chinese technologies and addressing key challenges, both countries can foster a mutually beneficial partnership in the dairy sector.
